Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamin A

  • Plays an important role in heart, lung, kidney, eye, and bone development
  • Vitamin A is crucial for Circulatory, Respiratory, and central Nervous Systems

While some vitamin A is required for proper fetal development, it is important that you do not get too much vitamin A from your prenatal vitamin. You can have all the vitamin A and carotenoids from fruits and vegetables that you want but high dosages of vitamin A in supplement form may cause birth defects and liver toxicity. Do not take more than the recommended 5,000 IU of Vitamin A.

Vitamin C

  • Vitamin C is necessary to form Collagen in bones, cartilage, uscle and blood vessels
  • Helps aid in the absorption of Iron

Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron if you are anemic, it is also an immune system booster.

Vitamin D3 (as cholercalciferol)

  • A Vitamin D deficiency plays a major part in birth defects, osteoperosis, chronic pain, depression and diabetes.
  • Cholecalciferol is the naturally occurring form of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body control calcium and phosphate levels. If Vitamin D levels become too low the body produces hormones that cause calcium and phosphate to be released from the bones. This leads to osteoperosis.

According to a study done at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences pregnant American women do not get enough vitamin D and their prenatal vitamins are not filling the gap, even with prenatal vitamins containing 400IU. Low levels of Vitamin D early in pregnancy is associated with a five-fold increase in the odds of preeclampsia, or toxemia.

Vitamin E (as natural d-alpha tocopheryl succinate and gamma, delta and beta tocopherols)

  • Natural Vitamin E, like the VE in Trimedisyn, is more easily absorbed by a fetus.
  • Premature infancs are often born with Vitamin E deficiencies that lead to breathing problems.

A study done at the University of Aberdeen in the UK recealed that low levels of Vitamin E during pregnancy increases the risk of asthma in an unborn child. Children are five times more likely to have asthma, vitamin E influences the growth of lungs and airway inflammation. (Vitamin E Intake During Pregnancy and Its Effect on Childhood Asthma)

Vitamin B1 (as thiamine HCl)

  • Thiamin is essential for your baby's brain development. Thiamin promotes normal functioning of your baby's nervous system, muscles, and heart.
  • Not having enough thiamine in your body can lead to muscle wasting, weight loss, tiredness, memory loss, confusion,

Expectant and nursing mothers are advised to take a minimum of 1.4 milligrams of Vitamin B1 per day. Nursing mothers who are Thiamin deficient put their babies at risk for beriberi, a disease that affects the baby's cardiovascular system and nervous system.

Vitamin B2 (as riboflavin)

  • Riboflavin helps your body produce energy needed to develop your baby's muscles, bones and nervous system.
  • Riboflavin deficiencies may result in anemia, poor immune system , digestive problems and poor growth.

Research suggests that riboflavin may play an adjunct role in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia and sickle cell anemia. Expectant mothers are advised to take a minimum of 1.4 milligrams of Riboflavin, nursing mothers should take no less than 1.6 milligrams.

Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxide HCl)

  • Vitamin B6 has been shown to significantly reduce the severity of morning sickness.
  • Vitamin B6 helps to make antibodies, red blood cells, and neurotransmitters.

Pregnant women have an increased need for vitamin B6, a mild deficiency appear to be but does not seem to cause any significant problems. Vitamin B6 is beneficial in managing and treating symptoms of morning sickness.

Folic Acid (as folacin)

  • Folic acid, also called Folacin, helps protects your developing baby from certain birth defects called Nueral Tube Defects (NTD's)
  • When taken prior to conception and during the first trimester you reduce the risk of your baby developing NTD's by 70%

Prenatal Multivitamins containing folic acid may also reduce the risk of preeclampsia by over 60% according to a study done by Canadian researchers in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Preeclampsia is responsible for about 60,000 deaths worldwide. Another study performed in the Netherlands was published in the European Heart Journal, suggests that folic acid may also reduce the risk of congenital heart defects as well.

Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin)

  • According to the US National Institutes of Health women who have low levels of Vitamin B12 have an increased risk of having a child with NTD's. The risk of NTD's was found to be 5 times higher among women with the lowest levels of B12, compared to women with the highest B12 levels.
  • Vitamin B12 also enhances energy levels and boosts endurance and reduce weakness and fatigue.

Biotin

  • The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that that women who are lacking Biotin increase their chances of having a baby with birth defects. This study also claims that a biotin deficiency may be the cause of birth defects in humans.

Biotin plays an important role in maintaining general health and keeping the body working properly. Biotin keeps sweat glands and bone marrow working efficiently. Biotin also helps relieve fatigue and depression.

Pantothenic Acid (as d-Calcium Pantothenate)

  • Pantothenic acid, or Vitamin B5 is essential for human growth and reproduction.
  • A Vitamin B 5 deficiency may cause depression, personality changes, heart problems, fatigue, sleep disturbances, muscle weakness, cramps, and increases your risk of infections.

Calcium (carbonate, citrate, malate, calcium ascorbate)

  • Your baby needs extra calcium to build healthy teeth and bones. If you don't get enough calcium in your diet during pregnancy, your baby will take it from your bones.
  • Cochrane Reviews have said that calcium supplementation reduces the risk for pre-eclampsia in women at increased risk for hypertensive disorders and who have low dietary calcium

Calcium Carbonate is the best type of calcium supplement because it has the highest percentage of elemental calcium, the type of calcium that your body readily uses.

Iron (from Ferrous Bis Bisglycinate Chelate) Ferrochel

  • Iron Ferrochel is easily absorbed and more bioavailable than other forms of iron such as ferrous sulfate and it is also more gentle on your stomach and colon.
  • Iron helps your body make new blood to carry the oxygen and nutrients to the baby during pregnancy. By the end of pregnancy you will have twice as much blood in your body than when you began the pregnancy. Your body needs extra iron to make this blood and also to support your baby's rapid growth.
  • A research group led by Seif Shaheen from the Department of Public Health Sciences at King's College, London, UK, in collaboration with colleagues from Bristol University, studied 3000 babies to see whether prenatal exposure to the nutrients iron and might play a role in the inception of early childhood wheezing and eczema. Babies exposed to high levels of iron and in the womb are less likely to develop wheezing and eczema in early childhood

Being low in iron can also cause you to feel more fatigued than normal in pregnancy, making you more susceptible to illness and infection. When you don't have enough iron in your diet, you produce fewer red blood cells which causes anemia. Iron deficiency anemia in the first two trimesters doubles the risk that your baby will be born preterm and triples the risk of having a low birth weight baby. Low birth weight babies are more than 40 times likely to die during their first month of life. Those that survive are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from a lifelong handicap or disability.

Iodine (as potassium iodide)

  • The American Thyroid Association has recommended that all pregnant and breastfeeding women in the U.S. should take at least 150 mcg Iodine
  • Iodine is crucial for a child's neurocognitive development

2.2 billion people are affected by iodine deficiencies and it is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation. Iodine deficiencies also contribute to spontaneous abortion, still births, congenital anomalies, and perinatal mortality.

Magnesium (as magnesium oxide)

  • Magnesium serves as an antacid to relieve heartburn and indigestion. According to the National Institute of Health it may also help reduce nausea in morning sickness.
  • Magnesium is very important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart
  • Proper levels of Magnesium may help prohibit uterine contractions while low levels of magnesium may contribute to pre-mature labor.

Zinc

  • L-OptiZinc is a patented form of methionine-bound zinc, an essential trace mineral plays an important role in growth and development, reproduction, digestion, and proper brain, nerve, vision and immune function.
  • L-OptiZinc is an antioxidant that neutralizes harmful free radicals, which may cause cell damage.

L-Optizinc is absorbed better and retained longer than other zinc supplements.

Selenium (as L-selenomethionine)

  • Selenium plays an important role in protecting the body from serious disease and illness. Selenium is important in the body's fight against free radical cell damage.
  • Selenium detoxifies toxic metals found in the body like arsenic and mercury.

Researchers discovered that children with the highest exposure to selenium, were less likely to wheeze than children with lower exposure.

Copper (as amino acid chelate)

  • Copper is essential for forming red blood cells.
  • Copper helps in the development of your baby's heart, blood vessels, and skeletal and nervous systems.

Manganese (as amino acid chelate)

  • Manganese helps in the formation of bone and cartilage.

Excessive levels of manganese has been linked clubfoot and stillbirths.

Chromium (as polynicotinate) ChromeMate

  • ChromeMate is a patented form of Chromium and nicotinate, which is a form of Vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • ChromeMate is needed during pregnancy to help regulate the expectant mother's blood sugar levels and improve the way her body uses insulin.

ChromeMate is beneficial in improving the mood of those with mild depression, and it also curbs sugar cravings. ChromeMate is used to assist in weight loss, increase muscle mass, decrease body fat and increase energy levels.

Potassium (as potassium citrate)

  • Helps regulate body fluids and blood pressure.
  • Potassium deficiencies negatively affect your mental health and wellbeing. A deficiency may cause muscle cramps, twitching, poor reflexes, irregular heartbeat, kidney failure, lung failure, fatigue, muscle weakness and muscle damage and cardiac arrest.

Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in the body and is considered an electrolyte. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure and heart functions. It is a natural pain desensitizer and promotes faster healing and contributes to a sense of wellbeing.

  • In a double-blind, randomized study, CoQ10 lowered the risk of developing preeclampsia in those who were at high risk for the condition.
  • Pre-eclampsia affects 2-3% of all pregnancies and is responsible for approximately 60,000 deaths each year.

Marinol DHA Powder

  • DHA is critical for brain development,. There is a direct correlation between high DHA levels in infants and increased scores on neural and visual tests.

The Journal of Pediatrics reported that the levels of DHA in mothers were directly related to levels in the umbilical cord and in the fetus.

Researches from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit and Laval Univeristy reported increased levels of DHA during pregnancy produced improved visual, cognitive, and motor development in the offspring.

Ginger Root 10:1

  • Prevents and treats symptoms of morning sickness, especially nausea, indigestion and vomiting

For centuries Ginger Root has been widely shown to prevent and treat morning sickness. Ginger root relaxes the stomach and relieves the feeling of nausea. Ginger is one of the best herbs for digestion, ginger root prevents indigestion and abdominal cramping. Ginger also helps break down proteins, aiding the digestion process.

Inositol

  • Inositol may protect against the development of neural tube defects like Spina Bifida and Anencephaly.
  • A few studies found human mothers with low inositol levels have shown an increased risk of having children with spina bifida.

A research team led by Monita Wilson, Ph.D., found neural tube defects in some mouse embryos from female mice genetically modified to have low levels of ITPK1, an enzyme involved in the metabolism, a compound important for neural development and function. The finding suggests that inositol depletion is linked to these birth defects.

Choline

  • Choline increase the size of brain cells and make them faster at firing electrical 'signals' that release memory-forming chemicals.
  • Choline may boost cognitive function, diminish age-related memory decline, and reduce the brain's vulnerability to toxins.

"Previous studies at Duke have shown that choline-supplemented animals are smarter and have a greater learning capacity, but we hadn't known until now whether the cells that make up memory-relevant brain circuits are changed by choline," said study leader Qiang Li. "Choline didn't just change the general environment of the brain, it changed the fundamental building blocks of brain circuits -- the cells themselves."
